If MythBusters get a robot, it's going to end up Mystery Science Theater 3000 style, and I'm all for it
Waiting here with my popcorn
I'm convinced Mythbusters needs a reboot. Misinformation or mythinformation if you will, is at an all time high. We NEED the show that promotes critical thinking to come back. It doesn't need the same cast, in fact I think it would be better with some fresh faces. Imagine all the good it would do if you could just show your crazy uncle the Mythbusters reboot episode that debunks his anti-vaxx conspiracy in an easily digestible and entertaining format.

Thinking about how the pacing of the comedy in the original MST3K is so unique in today's rapid-fire joke climate. Rather than barrage you with as many jokes as possible (which is a valid choice to make - Mel Brooks movies work mainly by this method), they rely on you 1. paying attention to the (strange and often incompetent) movie of the episode, and 2. thinking enough about it to hear the jokes they make, let them sink in, and laugh. It's a really mellow approach to humor that helps give it such a comfy feel when you're watching it, and we don't get much of that these days.
The reboot goes for rapid-fire comedy and it just never quite gels with the show's concept - it doesn't let you digest the movie, and so the jokes don't land as hard.

MY MST3K HOT TAKES:
Oo-wee this might ruffle some feathers
- Crow is gay or mostly masc-attracted bi and I won’t take any “buts”
- The sci-fi era is not nearly as fun and enjoyable as the Comedy Central era (I haven’t seen the reboot so I wont count it)
- Gigi/G is a better alternative to her previous name than GPC
- Joel was the best host, hands down
- Dr. F and Frank were the best mads, although Pearl is a close runner up
- humanizing the bots is lame unless you do something rlly unique and cool with them
For instance @twixedworlds has rlly cool human designs for Crow And Tom!
- both on-model and off-model art of the bots is awesome
- Tom would hover at a tilted down angle and the reboot just makes him look like a floating fire hydrant 😭
- Trace was the best Crow (sorry Bill, you’re still based tho)
- Frank is underappreciated and we all need to join hands and say “I love you TVs Frank”
- the previous line was a threat. This is mandatory.
- I’m thankful for the lack of shipping wars and proshippers in this community
- The show is actually not as aged as people think, the gay jokes are actually funny, and coming from a gay man, feel like jabs from a gay guy to another gay man and not distasteful. The Asian jokes not as much so lol, but I’m white so I have no place to say with that
- Tom’s art of his polycule “parentss” was actually really heartwarming and not enough people talk about that.
“Why are your moms holding hands?’
“I don’t know.”

A Random Thought About MST3K
(We will resume your regularly scheduled Inanimate Insanity angst soon after our breaking news.)
So I'm watching Season 13 of MST3K, or at least the part of it currently showing on the MST3K Forever-a-thon, and I finally realized something that always made the reboot seasons feel off in comparison to the originals- and it's not the hosts, Jonah and Emily and Joel all do great, it's not less funny, it's not the Mads, it's not the multiple versions of the bots or the fact that it's on the moon.
It's the host segments...but not the part you think.
A thing with MST3K is that the host segments all kinda tend to follow different patterns, at least what from what I've seen watching a ton of it. Now, each Host Tenure? Hosts Tenure for the latest, but each division lets say tends to have a higher focus on a certain type- not saying the other types don't exist, but each section tends to focus on one more.
Joel's tenure as host includes a lot of guest characters- characters that'll appear in that little window up in the Satellite of Love, generally from the movie they're riffing but there are exceptions depending on the circumstance.
Mike's tenure instead utilizes a lot of unique plots, especially once we get to the Sci-Fi era- these can be one-off like Crow biting Mike in Werewolf, the time travel plot in Time Chasers, the mirror universe from Last of the Wild Horses, or they can be larger overall plots- the Ancient Greece Arc, Deep Ape, the Observers, or the space children for a smaller example.
Jonah/Emily's* tenure has a lot of songs- famously there's Every Country Has a Monster, but there's also Concepts, Sing a Song for Jiger, Monster RSVP, a host segment entirely dedicated to some song that some or all characters on the SoL sing.
(*I didn't include Joel because I wanted to focus on the hosts exclusive to the reboot.)
Now, again, I'm not saying these are mutually exclusive- The Gauntlet is practically a season-long arc for Jonah, Mike encounters plenty of guest characters, and who could forgot that classic Joel-era song Idiot Control Now? But looking over the general vibe of the reboot-era host segments, I realized something that lead to a bigger realization.
Guest characters are now no longer shown through the Satellite of Love, instead being shown through transmissions, they're in other spacecraft- befitting of the more sci-fi elements of the reboot literally being on the moon, but...
...you ever notice that the reboot-era host segments have a less physical feeling than the classic episodes? It doesn't really feel like anyone's on a set anymore, like actual physical locations. Sure, there can still be depth but...it's hard to put into exact words but the locations shown in host segments now feel 2.5D instead of 3D. Most action happens in a straight line, all camera angles are straightforward. It feels less like a location and more like a big, long table with a background. Hell, it's something I noticed occurring more and more- up until Season 13 Moon 13 was a 3D location, but in the Gizmoplex era...now they're also on a 2D plane.
Now let's not get it twisted- I'm not saying they're bad, they're still funny and by all means that's the main requirement, I like the return of the invention exchanges that vanished early-ish into the Mike era, hell I like that S11 actually made a small arc that you have to pay attention to out of them to know it's even there- if you haven't watched it yet, I'm not gonna spoil it, it's free if you have Netflix. But it's just a small thing I noticed in the reboot era that I felt like I had to get down somewhere.
Anyway, back to Experiment 1310- H.G. Wells' The Shape of Things to Come.

Every once and a while, I remember a glorious quite from MST3K....
can't remember which season of was... maybe the reboot?
anyways, there's this scene where some dude with a hairy chest was leaning up against a doorframe, shirt unbuttoned, and one of the gang said "The petting zoo is *open*"
Mum and I occasionally use that quote to pester my Dad, like when he stretches an his shirt rides up XD

ive been wanting to get into godzilla media lately (hyperfixation go brrrrr) do you have any recommendations for someone who has only seen godzilla vs kong and one mst3k episode where they did gamera?
I sure do! I wrote up a guide on my favorite ways to get people started with Godzilla! You can read it here!
Also! Since you mentioned Gamera, I highly recommend checking out the 1995 movie Gamera: Guardian of the Universe! It’s a reboot of Gamera (first movie of a trilogy) , and it some of the greatest kaiju films ever made

Something I still posit after all these years is that the mst3k reboot is good but suffers temporally from the rise of geek chic. So it feels more mainstream when really its 90s counterpart was on a similar level. It just wasn’t cool yet

If I was in charge of a mst3k reboot, I woukd make the controversial decision to do new hosts, new bots, new mads.
I had an idea about one of the Mads being a scientist doing the experiment to find a cure for bad movies, but a suit in charge hijacks rhe project and forces him to use the experiment for evil. Giving the mads a relationship like M. BISON and Dhalsim in the Street Fighter movie.
It's set in Marine 13 and the Submarine of Love instead, the submarine only surfaces to refresh its air while the host is in the theater.
